Florida History - Ponce De León Ship Tour- Ft Lauderdale

The ship that Ponce Deón sailed to Florida. El Galión- a 170 foot replica of the ship arrived at the Bahia Mar Marina in Ft Lauderdale in May. It is a traveling history museum. This event was the celebration of the 500 anniversary of the last known trip by Ponce De León to arrive in St Augustine.

The tickets to climb aboard this historic ship were free and all 20,000 of them were snatched up really fast. They were sold out within the day.

We made a Florida homeschool field trip down to Ft Lauderdale at Bahia Mar Marina to soak in a lot of great Florida history. This is all a part of the Viva Florida 500 celebration. There are historic exhibits all over the state of Florida during this year.

Ponce De León arrived in Florida in 1513. The ship weight 495 tons. It was a part of Spain's West Indies fleet of ships.

The kids had a lot of fun exploring the ship and listening to the stories that were told by the ship's crew. They told us about how they had calm seas as they sailed from China to Ft Lauderdale except for the typhoon that they ran into as soon as they left port. It was really turbulent for a while. There are 28 crew members.

We were expecting to see the magnificant sails but the marina does not allow them to sail into port- they have to use an engine. They rarely use the engine. They use the same technology that Ponce De León used on the ship.

That is amazing!

There were wonderful displays all over the ship with stories of Florida history and the story of Ponce De León.
